Teeth whitening is the most requested cosmetic dental treatment in the world. Not only can white teeth impact the way that others perceive you, but it can also boost your confidence and self-esteem.
There are hundreds of products on the market claiming to be able to whiten your teeth and improve your smile. However, over-the-counter toothpastes, mouthwashes and teeth-whitening kits contain a much weaker bleaching solution than is used in our offices.
At SD Dental Implants, we offer professional, in-office whitening treatment, which has been proven to be more consistent and long-lasting, and produce better results than any at-home products.
Why Teeth Become Stained
Some change in the color of our teeth is expected over time, particularly as they naturally darken as we age. However, there are certain lifestyle choices that can contribute to a faster change in the color of our teeth.
Consuming lots of tannin-rich foods and drinks is one way of rapidly staining your teeth. This includes tea, coffee, berries, red wine and chocolate. Smoking is another primary cause of tooth discoloration, as well as being exceptionally bad for your overall oral and general health.
Other contributing reasons for tooth discoloration include prolonged use of antibiotics, excessive exposure to high levels of fluoride, as well as decay, damage, or trauma to the tooth.
Am I a Suitable Candidate for Teeth Whitening?
We believe in finding the right solution for every patient, and so before we approve your candidacy for any treatment you will need to attend a consultation with us at our offices.
During this appointment, we will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth and discuss the shade of whiteness that you hope to achieve.
We will ensure there is no dental work such as cavity fillings or crowns that need to be undertaken, before we can start the whitening process.
The Teeth Whitening Process
In-office teeth whitening is a straightforward and painless procedure. Before each whitening appointment, we will give your teeth a thorough clean. This will help to ensure that you get an even, consistent level of whiteness across your entire smile.
If the staining on your teeth is primarily external then we will use a process known as vital whitening. This is when a gel, usually containing hydrogen peroxide, is painted onto the enamel of your teeth. We then use a special light, which we shine onto the gel, creating a chemical reaction that whitens your teeth. Each vital whitening treatment takes between 30 and 90 minutes.
If you have nerve damage or trauma inside one or more of your teeth, then we would usually recommend that we perform non-vital whitening, which is performed under a local anesthetic. This method targets staining of the dentin, which the middle layer of the tooth. During this treatment, the whitening agent is placed inside your tooth, which is then covered using a temporary filling. When the desired level of whiteness is achieved, a permanent filling can be put in place.
How Many Appointments For a Whiter Smile?
The number of whitening sessions that you will need varies from patient to patient and depends on the starting shade of your teeth and the final degree of whiteness you hope to achieve. We should be able to give you a more accurate projection of your treatment timeline at your consultation appointment.
At SD Dental Implants, we are dedicated to delivering oustanding quality dentistry and patient care across every one of our treatments and procedures.
