Dental Crowns

Are you dealing with extensive decay, cracked teeth, or pain when you chew? There are now more ways to repair and restore teeth than ever before; however, dental crowns remain one of the most common and effective solutions. At SD Dental Implants, we provide quality dental crowns to restore the function and appearance of your teeth.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a hollow, tooth-shaped prosthetic that sits over the top of the affected tooth, completely covering it. Once in place, the crown restores the strength, shape, size and function of the original tooth.

Crowns can be created from a variety of materials including metal, porcelain fused to metal and 100% porcelain. Each type of crown has its own benefits. However, porcelain varieties of crown tend to be preferred by patients who require them in the most visible parts of their mouth. This is because porcelain can be color-matched to your other teeth, ensuring you can retain a natural-looking smile.

What problems can a crown help to resolve?

We may recommend a dental crown as the most effective solution if your tooth:
  • is cracked and needs to be held together.
  • is severely eroded.
  • is broken or weak and at risk of breaking.
  • is in need of a cavity filling too large for it to support.
  • is discolored, misshapen or otherwise aesthetically unpleasing.
You will also need to have at least one dental crown, if you are having a dental implant (a crown makes up the visible portion of the tooth) or bridgework, as this is held in place by crowns.

Advantages of dental crowns

The largest benefit of a dental crown is that it can cover most types of decay and damage, and restore the function of your teeth. It will also prevent the need for an extraction.

There are also some cosmetic benefits to choosing dental crowns. They can cover teeth that are discolored or stained, regulate the shape and size of a tooth and improve the overall appearance of your smile.

Dental crowns are one of the most robust treatments available, and have been shown to last longer than most other types of dental restoration.

What is the procedure to receive a dental crown?

The process to receive a dental crown usually requires several visits to our office. This is because each crown is custom-designed to fit each patient, so it will be necessary to take impressions of your teeth in order for it to be created.

The tooth that is to receive a crown will need to be prepared. This involves filing it down so that the crown can fit snugly over the top. In some cases, it may be necessary to build the tooth up, so that it can support the new crown. You will then be fitted with a temporary crown until your final, permanent version is ready.

Any work completed on your teeth will be completed after you have received a local anesthetic. If you are particularly anxious about your procedure, it may be possible for you to have a sedative, but this will need to be discussed with us at your consultation appointment.

Am I a suitable candidate for a dental crown?

We believe in finding the right solution for every patient. Before we recommend porcelain crowns, you will need to attend a consultation with us at our offices. At this appointment, we will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth to determine if a dental crown is the right treatment for you.

At SD Dental Implants, we are committed to delivering exceptional quality dentistry and patient care.
